As mobile devices proliferate, so does the discussion about intriguing possibilities for using these devices to enhance student learning. However, the tension between problems and possibilities is a strong one. In this paper, the challenges facing mobile learning (mLearning) will be explored. These include incomplete support, complex procedures in using the devices or the applications, expensive devices, and project running costs. The conclusion we have reached is that ubiquitous, simple and robust technologies are more likely to be successful, and that naturalistic studies are needed in order to investigate genuine learning benefits. These principles are exemplified by a study on the use of SMS (short message service) technology to support two cohorts of students studying English as a second language at a university in Hong Kong.
