It is envisaged that many of the identified components from current research and student evaluations can be useful, in this instance for creating a best practice model for the development, implementation and evaluation of online learning communities. While there has in recent years been extensive use of technology-supports, digital tools and resources for student online learning, teachers are still looking for theoretical and practical guidance in the design of effective e-learning strategies and activities. (Littlejohn 2004). This paper discusses common issues and research themes identified in a “Square of Best Practice”. It reports on the usefulness for instructors of such a model for theoretical and practical guidance in the design of effective online communities.
