During the spring semester of 2002, students at Iowa State University and the University of Virginia enrolled in a co-hosted distance education course. The course's purpose was to devise a list of core readings in the field of technology in education or teacher education. Developing the list of core readings was not as easy as intended, however. While trying to identify fundamental areas where important ideas could be found, we created the model described below. The four component model we describe was proposed to: 1. Provide an organizational structure for thinking about appropriate avenues for planned technology change, 2. Identify factors that are vital and important for successful technology integration into educational environments, 3.Reveal articles that explain - particularly well - how technology use may be influenced by the factors identified above, and 4.Generate discussion about the model, its components and the inter-component interactions we describe.
