The number and types of different graphic, audio and video file formats available through today's software provides users an almost bewildering number of options. Certain combinations of file formats and features are common in different applications (eg., GIF, JPG and PNG images on web pages). Deciding among all of these different choices requires a more in-depth understanding of the options that are available, and the benefits and drawbacks inherent in each. This interactive session will provide a focused review of the different file types and formats that are available for graphics, audio and video files. Options within each type will be discussed, and examples demonstrated and compared. The trade-offs involved among these choices, and ways to optimize these choices for different end applications, will also be reviewed. Participants will be given handouts and example files illustrating the comparisons, and invited to discuss their own experiences.
